“The Hand Speaks”: Opening April 26 in The Associates Gallery – TAG – A Preview

PRESS RELEASE:

The Associates Gallery at the Torpedo Factory Art Center is proud to present work of Kara Hammond and Drew Parris in an exhibit entitled: “The Hand Speaks.”

Beyond what each artist possesses in their innate mastery of the craft of drawing, these artists’ work exhibits an ability to take the simplest of materials – pencil, ink, and paper – to create singular instances of human presence, with a strong sense of beauty, wry humor, and emotional depth.

Recently juried into the Torpedo Factory, TAG newcomer Drew Parris is primarily self-taught in the medium of graphite drawing. His subjects often family and friends offering the viewer a unique emotional connection to his work. Kara Hammond will feature new ink wash drawings each a unique narrative vignette, reminiscent of a graphic novel.

A Brief Visit to New York

Our weekend in New York was full of museums, good friends and arctic cold temperatures – down to 1 degree above zero over the weekend. This did not deter us from hitting some hot spots…at the MoMA:MoMA Pollock show

From the entrance.

The entrance seemed to need something to draw attention. These are some ink wash drawings I did several years ago – studies of obsolete cameras, mostly Polaroid Swingers. I like to see them tumbling down the pillar.

The artist I’m sharing with through the end of April is James Dean, an excellent realist painter who was the Curator of Art at Air and Space, as well as the former Fine Art Director at the NASA headquarters in DC.

There’s more of his work at:

“So much I’m trying to forget.”

So vast, so efficient    Click on the image to magnify.

“What is this virtual world everyone is talking about?”

“So vast, so efficient…fluid. It gives one the illusion of existing outside of time, without dimension, all the while registering every life experience as it happens, with clarity and precision; information constantly in motion, yet held suspended in perpetuity. With your whole life recorded, one could achieve a kind of eternal life though electronic suspension. Your form, your words and expressions will always exist and can be broadcast worldwide in an instant.”

“Swell. If everyone will be busy recording and broadcasting their own lives, who will have time to watch anyone else’s?”

“Besides, there’s a lot of my life I’m trying to forget.”
